Tasmanian Esperanto Society

Welcome

Welcome to the Tasmanian Esperanto Society. We promote the learning and speaking of the international language Esperanto.

The Tasmanian Esperanto Society is located in Tasmania, Australia.

We are currently affiliated with both the Aŭstralio Esperanto Asocio and the Tasmanian University Union.

Meetings / Lessons

On Thusday the 22nd of March we finally had our first Esperanto lesson for the year. It went well and we'll definitely have a few more starters next week as this week at least three were away interstate and I was very late in letting everyone know the time and place of the first lesson.

The new home for our lessons is room 313 in the Arts Building. Thursdays at 6:30. We used to do Mondays at 6:00 as well but all our regulars from Monday have happily changed over to Thursday so we've abandoned the Monday lesson though will would start them up again if there were demand for it.

Again, if the building happens to be locked call me on 0422211567 so that someone will know to let you in.

It's not too late to start even if you're a complete beginner as we do have different levels and you can always start from scratch. In fact we have a new learning system that we've developed which will keep track of your individual progress. For more details on that and a log-in and password to that page you'll need to send an email to the address at the bottom of this page.

Content Of The Lessons

Each week I'll be posting up the content of our lessons in advance so that anyone that doesn't come to or can't make the class can keep up. We urge those that do come to class to try to learn as much of the next lesson as possible. This way you will get so much more out of the class. Lesson Plans

Annotated Readings in Esperanto

In order to help anyone learning Esperanto, either at our Thursday lessons, or working alone, we have prepared some annotations of several pages from the Esperanto version of Murder on the Orient Express. The text has been heavily annotated, so much so in fact, that simply by working through the text it is possible to actually learn Esperanto. It assumes almost no knowledge, though you will need to find information on Esperanto pronunciation from some other source. Click here for further information and to go to the annotated text.

Uni Tas Societies Day - 2007

We were again at Uni Tas societies day letting ppl know about esperanto.

Again we were selling beer but this year we had sponsorship from Moo Brew!

Everyone that bought beer from us had to learn a few words of Esperanto - such as saluton and dankon so we think we did a good job raising the profile of Esperanto.

Between last week's orientation day for first year international students and societies' day, we now have a list of over 30 students who are interested in our lessons and a further 11 students insisted on signing up for our society before the lessons even start. We now even have our first Botwanan member!

While I was manning our booth I also had the pleasant surprise of having a student come up to me and chat to me in Esperanto for 5 minutes... an Esperantist whom I'd never met before. He managed to teach himself Esperanto last year and has been very successful.

Uni Tas Societies Day - 2008

We got very lucky this year at societies' day. Despite a bit of rain recently, the weather was reasonable and with 5 of us there manning the Esperanto stand, I think we can call it a success. As usual there were a huge number of students thronging around in the uni carpark and so we had the chance to spread the word.

A huge thanks again to Moo Brew! for sponsoring us with a keg of beer. The Esperantists manning the booth probably drank as much as they sold so it helped to make the 3 hours of societies' day pass as if it had been 5 minutes. It certainly was a fun day.

In all, 29 students paid up to join the society; a further 25 students left their name and email address for further info. Oh, and we also sold a few t-shirts to non-Esperantists!

Coming Up In April

In April an Esperantist from Japan was in Hobart for a few days travelling around. Just about everyone from our society turned up at dinner to meet him and practise Esperanto. Unfortunately we had such a good time that we forgot to take any snaps for our website.

Visitors From France - 2006

Ultimately the whole point of learning Esperanto is cross-cultural exchange and here you can see it in action. Through the pasporta servo a French Esperanto family visited us while they were touring around Australia.

We organised a dinner for them so that we could all practise our Esperanto... plus enjoy ourselves.

We hope that our beginner Esperantists who have never visited Esperantists overseas will have formed some sort of impression of the welcome that might await them when they do...
